Picture books are perfect for your kiddos any time of year, but when Christmas rolls around it's time for special stories to celebrate the season.

I don’t know about you, but with every change of seasons, I am always looking forward to new books! Because of this, I love using books alongside thematic teaching and there’s just something about Christmas Books that feels extra special to me. If you’re looking for some new holiday book recommendations, you’re in the right place! Join me as I share my favorite Christmas Picture Books!

Christmas In The Big Woods By Laura Ingalls Wilder

This one will always be at the top of my list! If you grew up reading the Little House on the Prairie books, you’ll love this Christmas picture book. This book will allow younger readers a chance to peek into the world of “Little House” and see what holidays were like for Laura Ingalls and her family in the big woods of Wisconsin. You and your children will love the focus on simple holiday joys and family togetherness in this story.

Olive, The Other Reindeer by Vivian Walsh

Next up, if you haven’t read this silly Christmas book, you’re in for a treat! This story follows “Olive”, a dog who believes she might be a reindeer. Olive jumps on the Polar Express and heads straight to the North Pole to help Santa! Kids and adults alike will love the fun play on words in this story and follow along with Olive’s silly adventures.

Snowmen At Christmas By Caralyn Buehner

If you’ve read the popular story, Snowmen at Night, you’ll love this Christmas version! This story tells the tale of what Snowmen do once everyone else is fast asleep! This Christmas picture book is filled with plenty of holiday magic that will leave your students smiling.

Carla And The Christmas Cornbread By Carla Hall

This book, written by TV Chef, Carla Hall, follows the story of her younger self on Christmas long ago. Young Carla accidentally eats a cookie meant for Santa and worries she ruined Christmas! This heartwarming story shares the plan that Carla’s grandmother crafted to “save” Christmas.

The Gingerbread Man Loose At Christmas By Laura Murray

Have you read any of the fun Gingerbread Man stories from this series? If not, you’ll LOVE this one written especially for Christmas time. Follow the Gingerbread Man as he battles the winter elements to deliver a special gift. He won’t let anything stand in his way of spreading some Christmas cheer!

Room For A Little One By Martin Waddell

If you’re looking for a Christmas picture book with a biblical component, this is one of my favorites! This sweet story tells the birth of Jesus from the perspective of the animals present in the stable. You’ll love the beautiful illustrations and celebration of the true meaning of Christmas in this book!

The Polar Express By Chris Van Allsburg

This classic Christmas picture book will always be one of my all-time favorites to read around the holidays. I LOVE the big, beautiful pictures in this story and the sweet message of Christmas magic for all of those who believe. I love to read this one with students and then watch the movie right before Christmas break. Grab some hot cocoa and be sure to make it a PJ Day as well!

Pick A Pine Tree By Patricia Toht

This festive, Christmas picture book explores all of the traditions families take part in during the holidays.

With beautiful illustrations, you’ll love following along as family and friends hang stockings and lights, add decorations and pick the perfect Christmas tree! Children will love the descriptive text in this fun book.

A Simple Christmas On The Farm By Phyllis Alsdurf

This Christmas picture book is all about embracing simplicity and generosity during the holidays. This story follows a young girl and her family as they prepare their farm for guests at Christmas. They make holiday decorations and gifts, bake Christmas cookies, and invite everyone to join them in their red barn for the holiday. You’ll love being able to teach students about giving and enjoying simple pleasures while connecting with loved ones during the holidays.

Night Tree By Eve Bunting

This beautiful Christmas picture book tells the story of how a young boy and his family decorate a pine tree in the forest with popcorn, fruits, and seeds as a gift for the woodland animals. This is such a sweet concept and a great way to open the discussion around thoughtful, homemade gifts being the best ones we can give!
