Valentine’s Day in the Classroom

valentines day

Regardless of the grade you teach, Valentine’s Day is such a special time in the classroom! While this time may not necessarily be about true love, it is all about kindness and friendships. In a world as challenging as now, those two aspects are critical! Thus, Valentine’s Day in the classroom helps students remember how they have so many caring, supportive people around them. However, this excitement can also lead to some behavior issues due to so much energy and excitement. Thankfully, there are many ways to incorporate academics into Valentine’s Day celebrations to help students focus and learn!

Valentine’s Day Classroom Activities

Often, classrooms have a short Valentine’s Day celebration where students hand out their valentine cards. However, I love to celebrate the holiday in the weeks leading up to the big day. By doing this, students are super excited for lessons while learning more about what the holiday means. Thus, I incorporate Valentine’s Day in the classroom in various ways.

Books

Every year, I like to add new themed books to my classroom. Specifically, here is a list of 28 Valentine’s Day Books that are incredibly popular! For instance, there are more books in the Love Monster series. Additionally, there are ones about Cupid, animals, hugs, and robots! There are many options to ensure all students have a topic they are excited about. You might also like these winter books!

Videos

Students love videos! Often, it doesn’t even matter the topic. They just love getting to watch something. One of my absolute favorites is Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch. It is this amazingly heart-warming story about a secret admirer. Students of all ages will adore this read-aloud and the story behind it. Likewise, there is a really sweet surprise when listening to the story! After this video, it is fun to watch a directed drawing on How to Draw Hugging Hearts. Even better, sending the drawing home helps students remember to tell their families about the exciting lesson.

Bulletin Board

When working to develop an excitement for Valentine’s Day in the classroom among all students, decorations play a huge part. However, it can be time-consuming to put decorations up only to take them down after a few weeks. Thus, decorating a bulletin board is the perfect way to bring in decorations without spending time and money. For instance, Reading has a Pizza my Heart is an adorable option that is super easy to put up. It even includes decorative circles that can have the student names or anything the teacher wants. Additionally, there is a writing prompt page where students write about their favorite book. Ultimately, this bulletin board is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday while honoring the love of reading.
